IOTICS digital twins are virtual representations of "real" assets. "Real" within an application domain: not only objects in the physical world but, in general, entities that are meaningful within a domain (a process, an algorithm, a digital entity like a record in a database, …)
Digital twins securely mediate interactions between the real assets: two real assets can interact with each other only by means of their digital counterparts.
This "symmetry" provides inherent security because twins can access each others metadata in order to make an informed decision whether the interaction should happen or not, and data and commands exchanges are intercepted by the twin logic before being dispatched to the real asset.
